meet the kantha sari women collective
02.01.2022Kantha Sari's are composed out of the silk and cotton traditional garments of India. The recurring floral patterns can be recognized as parts of Saris (female garment) and the block patterns asparts of the Dothis (male garments.) The stitches are applied using the thread of the edges of the fabrics, making this a fully recycled item.
These days Kanthas are still made by the rural women of the lower castes with the same purpose, passion, and preciseness. The women collectives gather daily in the tranquility of their homes, connecting over their skilled needlework. In between tending the livestock, taking care of the children, and cooking the family meals, every stolen moment is spent on the Kantha's.
