Black pottery bowl Ø16cm
The art of black stone pottery: Fire and Earth. A unique handcraft performed by artisans, using the technique and skills of their forefathers. The earth is shaped into pottery items which can be used from the gas stove to the tabletop. It is in Manipur, a region hidden in the North East of India, where the Tangkhul Naga tribe creates a rich black texture made by crushing serpentinite stone and blending it with local dark brown clay. With their hands the clay is shaped into practical items. Polished for a shiny finish and set to dry in open air. The wood fire is slowly heated to 900 degrees Celsius. For 4 to 5 hours the pottery is being baked to the core. When taken out of the fire, each item has blackenedand turned into a blackshade. The creation of this pottery is a unique handcraft tradition: preserving heritage, using locally available resources and creating sustainable income opportunities for the new generation.
